Pandit Girish Chatterjee (known as Pandit Girish Chattopadhya in Bengali) was born in Kolkata, India, into a family deeply rooted in the Indian classical music tradition. He is the fourth generation in his lineage to uphold and preserve this rich heritage. A child prodigy, Girish began his musical journey at just four years old, under the guidance of his first mentors—his father, Pandit Tarakeshwar Chatterjee, and his mother, Shrimati Dipali Chatterjee.

His extraordinary abilities quickly became evident, earning him a prestigious scholarship to the renowned Sangeet Research Academy (SRA) at the age of nine, making him the youngest research scholar to join its ranks. At SRA, he devoted the next decade to an in-depth exploration of Indian classical music, studying its many facets under the tutelage of esteemed masters. Most notably, Girish had the rare honor of being the last disciple of the legendary Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, one of the greatest icons in Indian classical music. During his tenure at the Sangeet Research Academy, young Girish trained under some of the most eminent and influential classical music maestros of India. He initially apprenticed under Pandit A.T. Kanan before continuing his journey under the legendary Pandit Bhimsen Joshi. Contributions to Bollywood and Global Recognition

Pandit Girish Chatterjee was engaged as a music director by T-Series, one of India’s most prominent music companies, for a five-year tenure alongside his younger brother, Pandit Ashish Chatterjee. During this period, he collaborated with some of Bollywood’s most celebrated talents, including lyricists Indeevar and Naqsh Lyallpuri, and renowned singers such as Anuradha Paudwal, Sonu Nigam, Bipin Sachdeva, and Babul Supriyo, among others. His work significantly enriched the music of Indian cinema, earning him widespread recognition in the industry.

Beyond Bollywood, Pandit Girish Chatterjee made a substantial impact on television, film, and radio. His contributions to Music Asia (now Zee Music Company), a leading television channel in South East Asia, were particularly notable. In 1998, his rendition of the raga "Gunkali" was broadcast an impressive 100 times throughout the year across 38 countries, cementing his global presence and influence in the world of Indian classical music.

Milestones in Album Releases and Bollywood

In 2009, the internationally famed Bollywood actress Shabana Azmi inaugurated Pandit Girish Chatterjee’s release of his Indian classical music album “Gharana Kirana” (Volume 2) in his hometown of Kolkata. This event would mark Shabana Azmi’s second album inauguration for Pandit Girish Chatterjee. She first inaugurated his double album titled “Gharana Kirana” (Volume 1) and his Ghazal album “Shi She Ka Ghar” in 2001 in Mumbai.

In 2010, Pandit Girish Chatterjee wrote, composed and performed the Bollywood song “Mora Saiyyan Bedardi” for the Bollywood film “Mirch” which was produced and released under the banner of Reliance Big Pictures, an Ambani production. By doing so, he made history as the first Bengali artist to achieve this milestone in Bollywood, further solidifying his unique contributions to both Indian classical music and Bollywood. The film was subsequently nominated for the prestigious Indian National Award.

A Tribute to His Guru: Pandit Bhimsen Joshi

The passing of Pandit Bhimsen Joshi in 2011 was an immense personal and artistic loss for Pandit Girish Chatterjee and a moment of great sorrow for the entire nation. To honor the legendary maestro’s legacy, the All Bengal Music Conference organized a special commemorative concert at the prestigious Khelat Memorial Hall in Kolkata. Pandit Girish Chatterjee delivered one of the most unforgettable performances of his career during this heartfelt tribute.

He began the concert with Raga Suhag, transitioning to Raga Mishra Pilu with the soulful rendition of the iconic Thumri Nadiya Kinare Mora Gaon. He concluded the evening with the timeless composition Jo Bhaje Hari Ko Sada in Raga Bhairavi, leaving the audience spellbound and longing for more. The concert stood as a poignant celebration of his guru’s unparalleled contribution to Indian classical music, while also highlighting Pandit Girish Chatterjee’s own extraordinary artistry and deep reverence for his mentor.

Recognition for Contributions to Bengali Art

In 2013, Pandit Girish Chatterjee reached another milestone with the release of his first international Bengali album, Surer Jharna Dharai, in Los Angeles, California. This album represented a significant achievement in bringing Bengali music to a global audience. In honor of his exceptional contributions to Bengali art and culture, the Bangladesh Readers and Writers Association of Los Angeles presented him with a special accolade during the album’s release ceremony.

Honored by All India Radio and Global Recognition

In 2014, the Indian government’s broadcasting division “All India Radio” (Kolkata) invited him to record 2 Ragas to be placed in the governmental archives. In the same year, he received two city medals from Troy Trulock, Mayor of Madison, Alabama. These awards recognized him as an "Outstanding" individual in the community and included an official acknowledgment from the Mayor's office of the City of Madison, highlighting his contributions on a world stage.

In 2015, Radio Bangla, a prominent international Bengali broadcasting house based in London, UK, featured Pandit Girish Chatterjee in an exclusive interview about his Bengali album. During the program, they aired the song Ei Shobujer Maya Ghire, which was broadcast internationally as part of their special segment, Pujor Gaan. The album was uniquely distinguished by Pandit Girish Chatterjee’s ability to perform every piece in a single take, without retakes, a testament to his extraordinary precision and unparalleled artistic mastery.**

In 2019, Pandit Girish Chatterjee achieved a historic milestone as the first Indian artist to deliver a lecture at NASA's Los Angeles Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California, in its 75-year history. His insightful talk explored the scientific principles underlying the sound of ragas, captivating an audience of scientists and engineers. The session included an engaging Q&A segment, followed by a mesmerizing live performance in the Pickering Auditorium.

Pandit Girish Chatterjee also created a new raga titled Anjani Kalyan (Madhuvani Kalyan) and is currently working on repeating this achievement.
